NEVADA COUNTY GOES GREEN... GREEN! You've been hearing the buzz and all the eco-words. You are probably wondering, "What is a Green Home?" and "What's the big deal all about?" A recent Newsweek article states that sellers of ecologically correct homes are in demand and Sellers of ecofriendly homes are seeing green. Builders and sellers of green homes feel they offer a Win-Win for Buyers in that Buyers get value with "all the right stuff." "This really isn't the home of the future. This is the home of today," states a builder. Home Sellers who do not have a known "green home" can easily incorporate green features to increase VALUE and make their home stand out from the competition. WHERE DO WE FIND GREEN HOMES? ON THE MARKET RIGHT HERE IN NEVADA COUNTY! Laurie Hopkins of Coldwell Banker Grass Roots Realty is enthusiastic about green builders and many green homes currently for sale locally. "CBGRR currently has green homes for sale that truly stand out in our marketplace. Each is unique and has its own integrity. I'm not talking Birkenstock-ish here. They offer gentle luxury with an inviting aura; they feel good; they flow and feel open. They are energy-efficient and will hold their appeal and VALUE over time." WHAT'S IT REALLY ALL MEAN, THIS GREEN THING? Some of the spin sounds so big, like "environmentally-structurally-aesthetically intelligent." Well, same as ever, the impressive phraseology translates quite simply into VALUE. "Today's Buyers like all Buyers throughout history," says Laurie, "want the best deal and the best quality. More than ever, today's Buyers want to save money on energy and breathe uncompromised air in an aesthetically pleasing, low-maintenance environment." The greenest homes require minimal energy, improve indoor air quality, and maximize air flow and natural light. They embrace native plants and terrain. They use little water: drip irrigation, low-flow faucets and toilets, recycling of rain water. They promote use of natural as well as sustainable materials and regeneration of biodegradables, as in composting and organic growing. Laurie's Sellers, David and Deborah Wills of Nevada City, talk with pride about their 4-year-green home for sale off Highway 20 East. Dave, who grew up in Nevada County, is a local custom builder and now is designing and eager to begin his next green project off (what else?) Greenhorn Road in Grass Valley. "I like to visit and study a parcel several times before I buy. I pay special attention to the placement of the home and out-structures for energy efficiency and also for maximum aesthetics," states Dave. Anyone experiencing the incredible views through the many large wood-cased windows and doorways and along the expansive ironwood deck at the Wills' Lightning Tree Road home instantly agrees. Builder David Wills uses bamboo, tile and slate, copper, wrought iron, fiber-cement fireproof siding, and ironwood decking to name some of what he calls environmentally sustainable materials. For power, Dave has long been a proponent of and designer/user of predominant SOLAR power systems with reverse PG&E meters. Deborah Wills' flowing and natural interior designs, beautiful low-maintenance landscaping and organic gardens are integral to the ambience of their properties. The time for Green is now!
